পর্যটকরা জানান, রবিবার রাতে মালদা থেকে কাঞ্চনকন্যা এক্সপ্রেসে উঠেছিলেন। ট্রেনে অচেনা দুই সহযাত্রীর সঙ্গে আলাপ হয়। সেই সহযাত্রীরা তাঁদের চা খেতে দেন এবং পরে তাঁরা বেহুঁশ হয়ে পড়েন। পরের দিন, রেল পুলিশ তাঁদের অচৈতন্য অবস্থায় উদ্ধার করে হাসপাতালে নিয়ে যায়। জ্ঞান ফেরার পর তাঁরা দেখেন, তাঁদের সমস্ত জিনিসপত্র, এমনকি ভ্রমণের ভিসাও চুরি হয়ে গেছে।

পর্যটকদের অভিযোগ, তাঁরা শিলিগুড়ি জংশনের টাউন জিআরপিতে অভিযোগ দায়ের করলেও উপযুক্ত সাহায্য পাননি। পরিবর্তে মালদায় গিয়ে বয়ান রেকর্ড করার জন্য চাপ দেওয়া হয়। এক পর্যটক, ইয়ানা সিদ্দিকি, জানান, "আমরা কখনো ভাবিনি ভারতে এসে এ ধরনের সমস্যার মুখোমুখি হব। এমনকি পুলিশও সাহায্য করছে না। আমাদের ভিসা চুরি হয়ে গেছে। কীভাবে দেশে ফিরব, বুঝতে পারছি না।"

রেল পুলিশের এক কর্তা বলেন, "কয়েক বছর আগে এমন ঘটনা বন্ধ হয়েছিল, কিন্তু এখন আবার বাড়ছে। মূলত ‘জহর খুরানি’ গ্যাং এই অপরাধ করছে। আমরা পুনরায় অভিযান শুরু করেছি এবং যাত্রীদের সতর্ক থাকতে বলছি। অচেনা কারো দেওয়া খাবার গ্রহণ না করাই ভালো।"

 Two Bangladeshi tourists visiting India to explore the hills became victims of a horrifying incident. Their journey from Malda to Siliguri took an unexpected turn when they were drugged and robbed, ending up at the New Jalpaiguri Railway Hospital.

 

According to the tourists, they boarded the Kanchan Kanya Express from Malda on Sunday night. They befriended two unknown co-passengers who offered them tea. After drinking the tea, they lost consciousness. The following day, railway police found them unconscious and rushed them to the hospital. Upon regaining consciousness, they discovered all their belongings, including their travel visas, had been stolen.

The tourists filed a complaint at Siliguri Junction's Town GRP but claimed they did not receive adequate support. Instead, they were pressured to travel to Malda to record their statements. Yana Siddiqui, one of the victims, said, “We never expected to face such problems in India. Even the police are not helping us. Our visas have been stolen. We don’t know how we’ll return home.” 

 

A senior railway police official commented, “Such incidents had stopped a few years ago but are now increasing again. The ‘Jahar Khurani’ gang is responsible for these crimes. We have started fresh crackdowns and are advising passengers to remain vigilant. They should avoid consuming food or drinks offered by strangers.”

Efforts to contact Kunwar Bhushan Singh, Siliguri’s SRP, for comment were unsuccessful. A senior railway police official remarked, “Such incidents were common in North Bengal trains a few years ago but had stopped after some arrests. Recently, these crimes have resurfaced, typically carried out by members of the 'Jahar Khurani' gang. We’ve been instructed to launch fresh crackdowns and alert passengers to avoid consuming food or drinks from strangers, as it could be fatal.”

সম্প্রতি কাঞ্চনকন্যা এক্সপ্রেসে দুই বাংলাদেশি পর্যটক এই গ্যাংয়ের শিকার হন। দার্জিলিং ও সিকিম ভ্রমণের উদ্দেশ্যে রওনা দিলেও তাঁদের যাত্রা শেষ হয় হাসপাতালে। ট্রেনে তাঁদের চা খেতে দেওয়া হয়েছিল, যা পান করার পরে তাঁরা অচেতন হয়ে পড়েন। জ্ঞান ফেরার পরে তাঁরা বুঝতে পারেন, সমস্ত জিনিসপত্র, এমনকি ভিসাও চুরি হয়ে গেছে।

এই গ্যাং প্রথম ধরা পড়ে আসানসোল শিল্পাঞ্চলের রেল রুটে। সময়ের সঙ্গে এদের কার্যকলাপ উত্তরবঙ্গ ছাড়িয়ে ভারতের অন্যান্য অঞ্চলেও ছড়িয়ে পড়েছে। রেল পুলিশ জানিয়েছে, এই অপরাধ দমনে নতুন অভিযান শুরু হয়েছে।

This gang operates with chilling precision, targeting unsuspecting travelers by feigning friendliness, striking up casual conversations, and ultimately incapacitating them with spiked food or drinks.

The modus operandi involves mixing sedatives—often derived from the seeds of the Datura flower—into beverages or snacks. While not lethal in small doses, these substances render victims unconscious, allowing the criminals to loot their belongings.

The recent plight of two Bangladeshi tourists aboard the Kanchan Kanya Express highlights the gang’s brazen activities. What began as a picturesque journey to the hills of Darjeeling and Sikkim turned into a nightmare when they were drugged and robbed mid-journey. Similar incidents have been reported earlier, with the gang first surfacing on routes near the Asansol industrial belt. Over time, their reach has extended beyond Bengal to other parts of the country.

The Railway Police, acknowledging the resurgence of this gang, has initiated fresh crackdowns. However, a senior officer admitted the difficulty in eradicating such crimes entirely due to their deceptive nature. "We are urging passengers to remain vigilant and avoid consuming anything offered by strangers, as such incidents can lead not only to theft but potentially fatal outcomes," the officer stated.

While arrests in previous years had briefly curbed the gang’s activities, their return poses a significant challenge for railway authorities. Passengers are advised to exercise extreme caution and report suspicious behavior immediately.
